Former CEO of Zurich Insurance Group Martin Senn committed suicide on Friday May 27th. This follows the heels of another high profile suicide at the multi-billion dollar corporation, their past CFO Pierre Wauthier also blew his brains out just three years prior. With suicide comes the political, and in my view, ideological response to people deciding to ‘opt out’. The reality is that governments and societies seem completely incapable of dealing with suicide, let alone understanding it. (more…)
- Group A claims “it’s about time,” that this issue has been a long time coming and those who are opposed to legalized gay marriage are on “the wrong side of history.” This is a human rights issue, the next step is the acceptance of a spectrum of human sexual orientation and gender identity.
- Group B claims it is a betrayal of their laws, a slap in the face to their culture, and an abomination that the highest court of the land should begin legislating cultural issues.
Of course, being in the hotbed of the American liberal (any densely populated urban center…) leads me to want to believe in #1s argument. Oh how my metaphorical heart aches for the oppressed amongst us, for my sexually liberal ethical compass is not offended by sodomites, and I have no peer group from organized faith to demand that I reject this. Racism has existed since competing tribes have existed. It is a deeply engrained, biological creation. It occurs through a need for the brain to process vast quantities of information in an efficient manner. We categorize, we stereotype, and we generalize people into convenient ‘groups’. (more…)
It all begins in middle school. Your first election year. “I want you to become an active member of our society,” our enthusiastic 20-something English teacher will say passionately. “Go out there and learn about the candidates! Make your voices heard! You kids are the future!” Que the mock school presidential elections, the ‘researching’ on Wikipedia of the issues. Que the ‘research essays’ on how bad the media is. Then fast forward a bit, it’s high school and the same story gets told, “it’s your duty as a citizen of this country, get out there and vote!”
Then it’s college. Then it’s your work place. Give it a rest. To be frank, they were all full of it and can shut up now. For those people who actually have to be encouraged to vote, they shouldn’t. Here’s why. (more…)
In response to a lot of posts and messages around the internet of Arab or Israeli solidarity… I have to just say it: there will never be peace between Israel and Palestine. The conflict will be continuous and will never stop until the power dynamic of the region changes. Current events do not bode well for the future of this region.
